Debbie first began studying Tai Chi in the mid 1990s under the guidance of Egberth Thomas, in the Netherlands. On her return to the UK in 1998 Egberth encouraged her to teach professionally. After teaching Yang Style Tai Chi and Chi Gung for three years in West Yorkshire, Debbie relocated to Stratford-on-Avon and set up the Swan School of Tai Chi & Chi Gung in 2001, teaching Yang and Chen style Tai Chi and Chi Gung.

Debbie is a fully qualified tutor, having attained her 7307 teaching certificate in 2003, and has undertaken advanced instructor training courses in Chen Style Tai Chi and Chi Gung with her current teachers Eva and Karel Koskuba of the Chinese Internal Arts Association (CIAA) in Berkshire. Debbie trains regularly with Grand Master Chen Xiao-Wang and Master Chen Yin-Jun for Chen Style Tai Chi.

Debbie's main teachers remain Eva and Karel Koskuba and Debbie would like to acknowlegde their expertise and continued support.

Debbie holds professional membership of the CIAA, the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts, and holds instructor level membership of the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain.

An essential aspect of student learning is the recognition of the skills attained and progression, and Debbie empowers her students to learn other forms which she herself has learnt e.g. Weapons – Chen Style Single and Double Broadswords, Chen Style Straight Sword, Chen Style Single & Double Fan, Chen Style Spear, Yiquan; and utilising her wide knowledge of other Tai Chi and Martial Art styles in comparing other styles and forms to enrich students' learning environment. Debbie continues to develop her personal skills enabling her to adapt the different techniques to focus onto individual requirements.

Debbie’s enthusiasm for teaching professionally has been demonstrated through a wide range of specialist experiences e.g. Welcombe Hills School & Ileap for Stratford Council (both for young people with specific learning difficulties), Shipston and Willows Primary Schools, Alcester Grammar School, Ernesford Grange Community School Coventry, Stratford-on-Avon College students, Guide International Camp Arden 02; workshops at Leamington Spa Peace Festival; also Adult Education classes in Stratford-Upon-Avon college, and several weekly classes for Age Concern.

Debbie regularly gives talks and demonstrations to various Women’s Institutes, Rotary Clubs and Church groups. She currently teaches 18 weekly classes including several one-to-one sessions & is always happy to adapt her skills & techniques for any individual or group requirements.
